The program was well-received, with plans for expansion to new provinces. Key aspects included a national and provincial support network and local practical workshops for coaches. Alberta Soccer and Soccer Nova Scotia were inaugural provincial partners and hosted successful Regional Coach Education Weekends.
Soccer Nova Scotia’s commitment to reduce barriers for women coaches across recurtment, training, certification and mentorship fostering the development of women coaches province wide is exemplified by the TELUS She CAN Coach program. With expanded reach and continued support, Year 2 is set to build on the foundation established in the first year, driving further progress in women’s soccer coaching in Nova Scotia and Canada.
“Following the successful first year of the TELUS She CAN Coach program, Soccer NS is eager to introduce the program for another year,” stated Lindsay MacAskill, Executive Director of Soccer NS. “This initiative, among others, will have a significant impact on nurturing an inclusive and diverse soccer community. By addressing the unique challenges that women encounter in the sport, we are dedicated to promoting gender equality and establishing a supportive environment for women and girls in Nova Scotia. We have witnessed firsthand the positive outcomes of this program, and it will continue to offer opportunities for the advancement and empowerment of women in soccer.”
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
TELUS She CAN Coach is a national coach recruitment, development, and training project designed for women to address their challenges regarding soccer participation.
This program differs from a typical mentorship program as it involves recruitment, training, and development. It aims to recruit and support new, entry-level women coaches at community-based clubs beginning their Canada Soccer Grassroots Coach Education.
Selected Clubs will recruit 8-10 women coaches to their community club to begin their Grassroots Coach Education training and participate in the program.
TELUS She CAN Coach will strive to support and advance gender equity in soccer by reducing the barriers to entry for women coaches. Canada Soccer and its Provincial Partners aim to increase the number of women coaches and encourage more girls to engage in the sport.
